Yesterday’s epic drive paid off as we were only 2 hours from DC. Pushing the budget above £30 a night also paid off as we had no fleas nor cockroaches, plus really comfortable beds.
When talking to people at the Speedway on Saturday, one had mentioned he was from DC and recommended an area to stay in – just on the outskirts but near a metro station that takes 20 mins to reach the centre. This was ideal as it was just off the main road back New York.
We’re looking at monuments in no time at all, and despite weather warnings we get blue skies. We visit The White House, Lincoln’s statue and the archives where historical documents are kept such as The Declaration of Independence . The best sight in DC was Ben’s Chili Bowl, another Man v Food recommendation. Visited by Bill Cosby and even Obama, we had some of the best Chili Dogs in the world (reportedly). The reviews are spot-on.
They had an app that allowed you to post a picture of yourself to the monitor above the counter, so for 10 minutes Stew was a mini celebrity. The walks were covered with photos of other celebs that have visited; Russell Crowe, Bill Clinton and more.
After confirmation that our hotel in NY is open, we pack for our last day with the car. Huge piles of clothes are squeezed in to suitcases, ready for the final road trip as we take residence in New York for the last 5 days (weather permitting!).
